Flower Care - 5 Basic Tips

Flower Care - 5 Basic Tips

You would be surprised at the myths around flower care! We once had a flower lover come into the shop with a brown bouquet. She was desperate to revive it after leaving it in a hot car, out of water for HOURS. She dipped her bouquet in vinegar (she had seen this online) in hopes of reviving it. FYI, it didn't work, and it smelled terrible. If your flowers will be more than 10 minutes without water, we recommend purchasing a water wrap from us. It's only $2, and it's your best insurance policy if you don't have a vase on hand.

Let's make sure we have the basics down.

1) Fresh water - bonus points for changing every day and adding a little flower food, but you've absolutely got to do this when the water is cloudy. Some flower types try to heal themselves and actually release residues into the vase water. That makes it hard for the other stems to drink.

2) Away from bright, direct light - cut flowers are not plants, and they don't need bright light to thrive. Move them away from hot windows, heat sources, or electronics. We don't need you to put them in the refrigerator.

3) Use the flower food packets; they are just a little snack for the blooms. It's not a crazy chemical cocktail or toxic. It's a little sugar formulated for flowers to help them conserve their energy and last a little bit longer. Most of the time we put flower food in our water at the shop, so they are used to it. Sometimes withdrawals are harder on the blooms, so we recommend using the flower food packets - it especially helps roses last longer.

4) Fresh cuts: If you look at the color of the stem, most of the time a fresh cut will be white. When stems start to turn brown, give them a fresh cut so it's easier for the plant to take up water.

5) Keep leaves out of the water. We like to remove any leaves that are below the waterline. This keeps the water fresh for longer.

Hidden Secrets: Most shops get their biggest deliveries at the front end of the week. This is true for us as well, although we continually refresh from our plots as needed and as available during the week. A great day to visit us is Wednesday, for example, as the blooms are processed and out on the floor, and the week is still young enough to get first-choice, show-stopping varieties before they sell out.
