New Plantings are arriving for Summer Season!
The Little Meadow has a micro-farm / mini field in Colonial Place. Seasonal flowers are grown here with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly plants, cut flowers with a good vase life, and unusual blooms.
THE PRE-CURSER:
The growing field has taken shape over the years when a couple of city trees were taken out due to disease. The increase in light opened the area up for dreams and possibilities. A small & shady patch full of grass and rhododendrons transitioned first into a full-blown weed patch while it was slowly cleared (this seriously took forever) and the roots of the random plants were painstakingly dug up. It was a long process, but it is ready.
THE START:
This season, 2025 the plot was finally hand-tilled and rows were put in with a row-maker. This Spring, it was planted with fresh seeds! We also got a generous donation of free plugs, encouragement, and free advice from a local flower farmer, Allissa Brunner at Jade Rabbit Flowers in Norfolk.
This spring the daffodils and tulips were strong. We had a few peonies that were lovely and are hoping for more next year (as always with peonies)!
Our Summer Season: Looking forward to warm season sunflowers, milkweed pods, cosmos and amaranth. Lots more on the way.
